Why is being obese such a problem?

Dr Chris: It causes so much disease and death, over 9000 people die each year of obesity - at least. Also obesity is linked to so many of the diseases for example if you're a obese your more prone to heart attacks, strokes, diabetes which can make you go blind, end up with kidney transplants, gangrene, leg amputations. Your more prone to certain cancers if you're obese, your more prone to infertility, you're more prone to depression. Obesity in itself is bad enough but because it causes so many other diseases we have to get this epidemic under control.

Why is a nation are we getting fatter?

It's not rocket science, we're eating too much and not getting enough exercise. It's a simple formula: calories in (that's your food intake) against calories out which is what you burn to exercise. we are eating far too much food that is high in fat and high in sugar and not exercising enough. The nation is suffering from a disease what I called mad couch disease. We are sitting there, doing no exercise, eating convenience foods and we're getting bigger.

And I suppose health professionals like yourself are getting more concerned?

Yeah, we're seeing more patients who are obese and are coming in with the complications of obesity and yet we know what the answer is, everyone knows what the answer is, but it's not easy to adhere to a healthy diet and lifestyle.

How can we lose weight in a sustainable way?

Far too many of us are eating far too much food and in particular far too much fat in our Western diet. What we need to do is to learn about portion control, we need to accept that we can live very healthily on smaller portions of healthier food. We need to train ourselves to get back to the smaller portions.

That is what Appesat is actually designed to do. Appesat is the first over-the-counter product in the UK the help people control their appetite by acting like almost a mental gastric band without the need for surgery. It has an active ingredient which is naturally derived from seaweed extract and Appesat is designed to be taken with water about 30 min before each meal.

So Chris how do products like Appesat work?

They are very interesting, you're having it with a full-size glass of water with before each meal. The water causes the ingredients of the capsule to expand in your stomach. Now as it expands it stimulates what I call stretch receptors in the stomach. So the stomach is getting the feel of satisfaction or satiety, because of that feeling of fullness in the stomach it sends a message to the brain which says: hey, I don't need to eat any more, I'm no longer hungry so then your appetite comes under control. it's a very simple procedure and very effective.

But is it wrong to think it is some magic miracle pill losing weight?

Yes, it's not a miracle pill. It will help you to learn to eat smaller portions so you become an expert in portion control. You are then used to the smaller portions and in time you can then stop taking the Appesat and you're not going to be missing the large plates of food that you used to eat.

Who are those most likely to benefit from a product like Appesat?

Well anyone who is overweight who wants to lose weight. So no matter how overweight you are whether you're overweight or obese, Appesat is a product that can help you. It's not to be used by women who are pregnant or breastfeeding or it's not be used if you're underweight - this quite surprising how some people use slimming aids when they don't need them. The guide is the body mass index, if your BMI is under 18.5 and should not be using Appesat. Also be wary if you're on medication or have a medical condition, you should discuss it with your doctor.

Would you have to take it all the time to maintain the weight loss?

No, you wouldn't have to be taking this long term. It's a means of you learning to eat small portions which would happen in due course. It's not like a drug, it's not going to have any adverse affects. I would have no concern about patients of mine using this over several months.
